Volunteers
come in all ages and sizes! By volunteering at the Red Cross, you
not only help us, you help yourself. The Mount Washington Valley
Chapter is successful because of the volunteers who give of
themselves everyday. Not only do our customers/clients benefit from
the work of volunteers, the volunteers have the opportunity to give
back to their communities, learn new skills, practice what they
learn, teach others and expand their circle of friends. Considering
joining our team!
Here are
some of the opportunities that await you as a volunteer:
Emergency Services
Armed Forces Emergency Services
The AFES system traces its origins back to the Civil War and Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross. This service allows local families to contact their loved ones serving in the military in times of emergency.
Volunteers are needed to be “on-call” to answer AFES calls. This opportunity basically requires a telephone and a desire to help our men and women in uniform and their families back home.
Disaster Action Team
Did you know that the most common disaster the Red Cross responds to is the individual house fire? Ninety-two percent of the disasters we respond to nationally are families displaced not by hurricanes and floods, but by fire. The DAT team is our front line in preparing for and responding to local disasters such as fires. We help people in their time of need by providing shelter, food, clothing, and simple TLC.
Help your local community to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters large and small. Get trained in how to manage relief operations, operate shelters, and coordinate large scale responses.
Disaster Services Human Resources
These special volunteers receive extensive training and are listed in a national Red Cross databank. DSHR personnel are deployed to major disaster areas in the aftermath of hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, floods, and tornadoes. Deployment can be for periods up to three weeks, and the help you bring will be remembered for a lifetime.
Last year, Mount Washington Valley residents volunteered for deployment to the Gulf Coast after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They operated shelters and provided basic medical services to very appreciative victims.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Instructors
Becoming an instructor is easy and rewarding. We are always looking to expand our roster of instructors. We need people to teach classes both at our facility in North Conway , and at businesses around the Mt Washington Valley. We offer instructor training in first aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation , automated external defibrillator use, water safety, and babysitting. Help others by teaching them to help themselves.
FUND RAISING
Help the Red Cross here in northern Carroll County and the Mount Washington Valley with fund raising, planning, organizing, making telephone calls, selling, thanking, and soliciting in-kind donations from area businesses.
Become a member of one of our event planning committees. Have fun planning one of our “fun raisers”!
OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
People of all ages can become involved in the Red Cross. While there is a minimum age to become certified in first aid and cpr, there are plenty of other opportunities to help. Become a DAT member, help with fund raising, even become a member of our Board of Directors.
There are plenty of ways to become involved with your local Red Cross chapter. Volunteer for a few hours a week or a few hours a month. Volunteer for a specific project or serve on a committee. Meet new friends, and feel good a bout helping your neighbors and those in need.
